David Attenborough thinks Lord Howe Island is “so extraordinary, it is almost unbelievable.

Formed more than seven million years ago with an eruption of underwater volcanoes, UNESCO World Heritage listed Lord Howe Island is a subtropical ‘treasure island’ preserved in time. Pristine beaches, lush rainforests, sheer volcanic peaks rising from the reef and thick pandanus forest, Lord Howe is a sanctuary for rare plants, sea birds and marine life. Home to hundreds of rare and endemic species, a visit to the island has the sense of a National Geographic expedition.

Lord Howe Island is a 2 hour flight from Sydney and 11kms long and 2.8kms wide. There are 350 permanent residents, with visitors limited to 400 at any one time. There is no mobile reception, however there’s wifi and landlines are available.  The speed limit is 25kms per hour and there’s no traffic lights  so you’ll feel blissfully lost in time and refreshingly off the radar.

Sparkling views are never far away at Capella

Capella Lodge is Lord Howe Island’s jewel, the ultimate island castaway escape. Nestled at the foot of the towering Mounts Gower and Lidgbird, Capella enjoys spectacular views. Contemporary in design with the free spirit of an Australian beach house, the nine island style guest suites offer a relaxed, barefoot luxury each with their own private outdoor deck and hot tub or plunge pool.

With Capella Lodge as basecamp, take to the many walking tracks to explore, climb to summit of Mount Gower on a guided day walk, rated one of the world’s best. Dive in to the clear, warm waters and discover a vibrant submarine world where a riot of fish cruise among the corals. There’s complimentary mountain bikes too.

Relax at the Capella Spa set in the lofty setting among the swaying Kentia palms and enjoy the rejuvenating treatments.

The main dining pavilion is the best place to watch the weather race in from the sea and the clouds that gather over Mt Gower. Dining is a celebration of superb local & regional produce. Much is harvested from the rich volcanic soils in Capella’s own kitchen garden. An abundance of fresh line-caught fish graces the daily-changing menu most evenings alongside island-grown greens and coastal herbs.
